The launch of the Master of Arts in Translation and Interpretation (MTI) programme is the result of more than a decade’s continuous efforts and success of NTU’s team of experts in its pioneer work in the development of translation programmes, such as it’s the Minor in Translation Programme launched in 2004, and the former Graduate Diploma in Translation and Interpretation Programme (GDTI)  launched in 2005. 

Benchmarked against the best translation programmes in the world, NTU’s MTI programme

is structured with a strong academic emphasis capitalising on Singapore’s acknowledged expertise in bilingual teaching and research. It seeks to build upon and further strengthen NTU’s existing translation, bilingualism, and bicultural research capacity and teaching expertise, and at the same time to incorporate the latest cutting edge technology in the area of computational linguistics and machine translation.

Pedagogically, the MTI programme features for its interdisciplinary curriculum that offers translation-focused, industrially relevant, and academically stimulating professional training that builds upon teaching and research excellence. Its specialized courses integrates the training of translation and interpretation skills with the knowledge of various subject areas ranging from, translation studies, linguistics, literature, public policy, mass communication, business, medicine, and computer engineering that the University is known for its expertise in. The curriculum will also include a special 6-week immersion programme in China with an esteemed institution in the teaching and research of foreign languages as well as translation.

 

Admission Requirements

Admission to the MTI programme will be based on a candidate’s prior academic record, professional experience, and language proficiency.

Phase Ⅰ

Prospective students should meet one of the following requirements:

  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution plus meeting both of the following language proficiency requirements:
      • A good pass in GCE ‘A’ Level General Paper, or equivalent, or a higher level test
      • A good pass in GCE ‘O’ Level CL1, or Higher Chinese, or equivalent, or a higher level test
  2. A Nanyang Technological University Graduate Diploma in Translation and Interpretation (GDTI) with a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 5.0, and relevant work experience.
  3. A certificate of English language proficiency for international applicants whose first language is not English. Results shown on the certificate must be from a test taken within the past two years (e.g., IELTS 6.5 (or TOEFL iBT 90), with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.)
  4. Other qualifications and relevant work experience, as approved by the Programme Director and/or the Academic Board.
Phase Ⅱ

In addition to the above requirements, all short‐listed applicants must take a self‐monitored exam, comprising two translation tasks and two oral assessments in Chinese and English. Guidelines for submitting the files and recordings by a specified deadline will be provided accordingly. The final selection of students will be determined by the Programme Director and the programme’s Academic Board.

Programme Structure

The MTI programme, which is specifically designed to provide the most updated training and education in translation and interpretation, is not only for university graduates but also for working professionals. Accordingly, classes will be held in weekday evenings and weekends, allowing working adults to enrol in the MTI programme.

The MTI programme will admit full-time students with a period of candidature between 1 to 2 academic years. The duration for the programme is a minimum of one academic year (2 semesters, a 6-week immersion programme in China, and 12 week independent work on dissertation/ final project write-up). A maximum candidature is two academic years (four semesters, a 6-week immersion programme in China, and 12 week independent work on dissertation/final project write-up). Students who are not able to complete the candidature within two academic years will be required to pay an additional of S$2,000 for each course.

To graduate, students have to complete a total of twelve courses and fulfil a total of 40 academic units (AUs), including a 10-AU Dissertation/Project: 

  • 5 core courses (12 AUs)
  • 4 courses during the immersion programme in China (12 AUs)
  • 3 elective courses (6 AUs)
  • Dissertation/Capstone Project (10 AUs)

Tuition Fees

Every year, fees are reviewed and subject to revision. As and when fees are revised, the new fees will be applicable to new students. All fees listed are in Singapore dollars (S$) and are inclusive of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The tuition fees payable for the entire programme is S$22,000. This amount does not include return air tickets to China, accommodation and living expenses, during the 6-week immersion programme in China, as well as miscellaneous fees.

For Graduate Diploma in Translation and Interpretation (GDTI) programme students with approved credit transfer and/or exemptions, the tuition fee payable is S$2,000 for each course.

The tuition fees are payable by semester and subject to adjustment made by the University. The payment schedule are as follows:

Immersion Programme at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU)

Students are required to attend a 6-week intensive immersion programme at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) in China. As a major university under the Chinese Ministry of Education, BFSU is  among the most established universities and offers best foreign language programmes in China. BSFU serves as a national centre for teaching and research on foreign languages, foreign literature, finance, law, and international studies, and is also a major training centre for foreign language personnel, especially senior interpreters and translators in China.

With an intensive 240 hours dedicated to addressing the practical aspects of translation and interpretation, the immersion programme in China provides students with opportunities to advance their translating and interpreting skills in both English and Chinese languages. Specifically, the courses at BFSU draw on their established expertise in translating and interpreting for international organisations, government institutions as well as in the contexts of law, finance, and economics to specialize their training contents, which will further benefit our students, especially those who are looking to pursue a career in such sectors.
