  7. 7. Aren't Applied Linguistics and TESOL two different subjects?
Singapore University of Social Sciences's MATSL programme is an Applied Linguistics graduate programme with a specialisation in TESOL.

In major universities around the world, a graduate-level TESOL programme is typically offered either by an English/Applied Linguistics Department or by an Education Department.

Where the TESOL programme (typically an MA programme) is offered by an English/Applied Linguistics Department, there is greater emphasis on Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and this foundation is used to inform the theories and practice of English teaching. Where the TESOL programme is offered by an Education Department (typically an MEd programme), there is greater emphasis on Education, and this foundation is used to inform the theories and practice of English teaching too.

The goal of educating TESOL practitioners is the same in both the MA and MEd programmes, but the relative emphasis on foundational knowledge is different.
