Specialised Master Programme
Mulyadi, Muhammed Bin Abdul Rahim
Operations Maintenance Manager
Programme: Master of Science in Engineering Business Management by Coventry University
Institution: PSB Academy
What is this programme about?
PSB Academy and Coventry University are delivering this Master’s degree to help imbibe necessary capabilities in management needed for Singapore’s growing pool of engineers, and expedite the momentum for their career growth in this specialised sector
According to the SkillsFuture Framework for Precision Engineering jointly developed by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG), Workforce Singapore (WSG), the Economic Development Board (EDB) and SPRING Singapore, some of the skills needed by a senior engineer include leadership and people management, project management, business analytics, and quality management. All of these areas and more are covered in the 9 modules of this MSc Programme.
Who should take the programme?
The Master of Science programme is designed for both aspiring and experienced engineers who are seeking to develop key competencies in strategic and operational management to become effective decisions-makers in their organisations.
The programme will hone their capabilities in managing change, as the engineering industry faces disruption with the introduction of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, advanced materials and biotechnology, as predicted by the world economic forum.
While many engineers may consider taking on MBA programmes to learn business knowledge to further their career, I would highly recommend engineers to aspire to be Senior or Chief Engineers and take on leadership positions in projects to take this MSc programme, as the things we learn in the MSc in Engineering Business Management is tailored to engineers.
How did the postgraduate degree help you in your career?
I am in an engineering management role, and modules cover different elements that help me understand how i can do my day-to-day work activities better
I was looking to gain relevant knowledge to my industry, and the wide variety of modules including Sustainability and the Environment, Financial Decision Making and Risk Analysis, and Leadership and People Management is a good mixture of all the core elements needed for someone who is in management, and it helps me to be more confident with the knowledge I gained.
My Learning Experience
The lecturers are very helpful and approachable. My classmates and I always find it easy to make appointments with them to help us clarify and deepen our understanding of concepts and knowledge. They are willing to come back and help us at odd hours to accommodate our work schedules at our request, and it adds a lot of value to our experience.
You need to be committed and there is no turning back, and time management is important when taking on a part-time Master’s degree to balance your family and work commitments. As someone who works irregular hours, I had to give up some freedoms and recreational time to reach my personal academic goals.
My advice to anyone who wants to start studying and go beyond what they already have, choose a programme that suits what you are doing at work and schedule, and go for it. You will gain knowledge that will benefit your career as you gain more confidence.
